New Hardwood Floors

Replace old or damaged wood with new, pre-finished hardwood flooring.  We can also replace hardwood that can no longer be sanded and re-finished.  Visit our showroom to choose from many different styles, textures, and colors of pre-finished hardwood flooring.  Ayoub N&H's showroom carries hardwood such as oak, maple, cherry, bamboo, and much more.  Also, choose from our selection of engineered hardwood or laminate for situations where regular hardwood cannot be installed.

Solid Hardwood
  • Must go over a acceptible wood subfloor and cannot be installed in basements.
  • Is nailed down to the floor.

Engineered Hardwood
  • Resists warping due to moisture.
  • Can be installed on wood or concrete subfloors.
  • Made up of several laminated hardwood plies.
  • Can be sanded and re-finished - not as many times as solid hardwood though.

Most hardwood comes in strips that are 2 1/4", 3" or 3 1/4" wide, although there are some types that 4" to 6" wide.

The most common types of hardwood flooring are:
  • Domestic Woods:  Cherry, Maple, Red Oak, White Oak, and Pine
  • Imported Woods:  Bamboo, Brazilian Cherry, Cork, Merbau, and Teak

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

Wood flooring that is in good condition and doesn't need to be replaced can be sanded and re-finished to give it a new look. The wood can be sanded down to remove the old polyurethane and expose a new layer of the hardwood. A new wood stain is then applied to the wood and coated with a new polyurethane layer to protect it. This process can be much less costly than going through hardwood floor replacement.

Hardwood flooring is usually re-finished when the wood starts to show wear, scratches, dullness, or when a different color is desired.

Finishes:

There are two types of urethane that can be used in the re-finishing process, either water based or oil based.
  • Water based urethane: dries in a shorter period of time so the job can be done quicker. The floor can be walked on within two hours, and additional coats of polurethane can be applied on the same day. In addition, fumes from water based urethane are not as noticeable.
  • Oil based urethane: will take longer to dry and typically produce fumes that are very noticeable, although the smell does dissipate as the urethane dries. The process will take more than one day since a drying time of about 24 hours is required in between coats. Oil based urethane is better for floors in direct sunlight since it does not break down as quickly.
Ayoub N&H Hardwood Refinishing Process:
  1. Moving basic items of furniture.
  2. Sealing off area to reduce dust in rooms not being re-finished.
  3. Sanding the hardwood to remove old polyurethane & expose new surface of wood.
  4. Buffing the hardwood to smooth the surface & remove debris
  5. Application of hardwood staining if a certain color is desired.
  6.  Application of water or oil based polyurethane.
  7. Additional buffing to smooth surface & remove dust
  8. Application of second coating of polyurethane.
  9. During the second coating, new shoe molding will be installed & transition strips refinished to match the hardwood.
