Fix That Floor: Common Carpet Repairs

carpet repair by Ayoub N&H Carpet & Rugs

Although many carpet manufacturers advertise that their products last for about 10 years, carpeting can start looking old and worn long before it is worn out. After 3-5 years, many carpeted areas begin showing their age. Here are some of the reasons customers call Ayoub N&H Carpet & Rugs for repair on their wall to wall carpet:

Buckled Carpet

Carpet can begin to ripple or buckle for many reasons. Often, the material is improperly stretched during installation, tackless strips that should hold the carpet in place are loose or missing, the carpet backing is separated, or there are issues with the padding. Sometimes, simply dragging a heavy piece of furniture across the carpet can create a wrinkle. Restretching the carpet can correct many of these issues.

Stained or Torn Carpet

Pet urine, food or beverage stains, and many other substances may leave permanent marks on the carpet that even steam cleaning and spot treatment won’t erase. Furniture can also tear up carpet, causing areas of excessive wear. Patching a carpet may be a solution when stain removal and other corrective actions are insufficient. A careful eye for color/material matching paired with expert installation is required to make this type of repair look right.

Tears and Separated Seams

There are always seams in a typical carpet installation—but you shouldn’t be able to easily tell where one section of carpet ends and another begins. Unfortunately, seams can start to separate or pull apart in high traffic areas (especially if the edges were not correctly aligned and secured during installation). Fortunately, these seams can often be repaired using seam tape and adhesive to restore the carpet.

Loose Loops

“Zippering” is a common issue with Berber carpet that is prone to snagging. A lengthy loop of the flooring may pull loose, much like a thread coming out of a sweater, where a fiber is not secured to the backing. It’s not a good idea to clip this loop or try to pull it free. Instead, it should be repaired with care so that there is not a bald spot on the carpet.
